OB/GYN Residency Greenville

Training leaders in women’s health

Our mission at the Prisma Health/USC School of Medicine Greenville OB/GYN Residency Program is to train leaders in women’s health – in the community or the academic arena. Our residents practice with integrity, intellectual curiosity, compassion, cultural competence and commitment to improving the health of patients. Our team is marked by the health of its members, and our graduates are well prepared and ready for practice in OBGYN specialty care or fellowship entry on day one.

The OB/GYN Residency program is part of a large academic medical center affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. We also have partnerships with Furman University and Clemson University. Our hospital system, Prisma Health, is the largest in the state of South Carolina.

Video: About our residency

Our main hospital is the referral center for a large catchment area, creating a high volume, high acuity training program for residents. Our vast educational and clinical resources provide residents the perfect environment in which to develop into productive clinician scientists, technically proficient surgeons, and compassionate and knowledgeable OBGYN physicians.

We are located in Greenville, South Carolina, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Greenville offers gorgeous views of the mountains and a “small town” feel, but with the benefits of a mid-sized city. Highlights of our community include:

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Upstate celebrates milestones

In 2023, the Prisma Health Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology celebrated two impressive milestones, the 75th anniversary of the OB/GYN residency program and the 50th anniversary of our first full-time academic faulty.

The first fully trained OB/GYN graduate completed the residency program in 1955 and practiced OB/GYN in Greenville, SC.

Since then, 116 graduates of our residency program have practiced at least part of their career in the Upstate. The residency program has had a remarkable direct impact on our community, improving the health of countless patients here at home.

The first full-time academic faculty member was hired in 1973. The OB/GYN Department is now home to 113 clinical providers, including:

  • 42 midwives, nurse practitioners and physician assistants
  • 71 physicians
    • 37 primary group faculty physicians
    • 34 academic faculty physicians

The academic faculty represent 10 different divisions and subdivisions, providing a vast range of specialty and subspecialty services to our community. We also currently have two fellowship programs, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, with plans to add a third fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility within a few years.
