OB/GYN Residency Greenville - Program Highlights

PGY-1: First-year residents take 12-hr calls Friday night through Sunday night. Usually, the resident is assigned either Friday and Saturday nights or Saturday and Sunday day call for the weekend. On average, each resident is off every other weekend (i.e. works five of every twelve weekends, at least two “golden weekends” every month). The resident on call Friday night is excused from work during the day Friday.

PGY-2/3/4: Residents in second/third/fourth year take 24-hr calls Friday and Saturday, and 12-hr call on Sunday. Usually, the resident is assigned Friday/Sunday call or Saturday call for the weekend. On average, each resident is off every other weekend (i.e. works five of every twelve weekends, at least two “golden weekends” every month).

Inpatient

All inpatient rotations are based at our primary clinical site, Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. We see and manage patients in the Labor & Delivery unit, Postpartum unit, High Risk antepartum unit, Oncology unit, medical/surgical unit, Emergency Department, and Children’s Hospital.

While on the Gynecology, REI, and FPMRS rotations, residents will have the opportunity to operate at three nearby affiliate hospitals—Patewood Memorial, Greer Memorial and Baptist Easley Hospitals. Our OBGYN residents do not have any off-service rotations nor any rotations at alternate sites.

Outpatient

Through outpatient services, our OBGYN residents provide care to a broad spectrum of patients. Residents see patients at the Prisma Health OBGYN Center (located 0.8 miles from the hospital) and are responsible for approximately 24,000 patient visits per year. Additionally, residents see patients in several subspecialty offices (located on or near the hospital campus):

• Gynecologic Oncology – Prisma Health Cancer Institute
• Urogynecology – Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
• Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility – Fertility Center of the Carolinas
• Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology – Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology
• Center for Vulvar Medicine – Gynecology Specialists

The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program utilizes the ACGME Milestones Evaluation System, which encompasses specific behaviors, attributes or outcomes in the six general competency domains (listed below) to be demonstrated by residents during residency.

Evaluation System

• Residents are evaluated in each of the six ACGME core competencies:
  • Patient Care and Procedural Skills
  • Medical Knowledge
  • Professionalism
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  • Practice-based Learning and Improvement
  • Systems-based Practice
• At the conclusion of each four-week rotation, residents are evaluated by the faculty in a global evaluation form.
• Medical knowledge is assessed by performance on the in-training exam given each January and by ongoing assessments during each rotation.
• Twice yearly, each resident has a formal evaluation with the program director or associate program director in which the following are reviewed: milestone evaluations, faculty feedback, case logs, and timeliness of completion of administrative duties.
• At the conclusion of each rotation, residents complete anonymous evaluations of the faculty members they worked with and of the rotation itself.
• Twice yearly, residents evaluate the residency program.
• Promotion to the next academic year and to graduation are contingent upon attainment of appropriate milestones, demonstrated by satisfactory evaluations. If a resident is not meeting level-appropriate milestones, our goal is to identify issues early and provide an individualized learning plan that will allow for on-time promotion whenever possible. This may require curricular and schedule changes to ensure each resident receives the experience necessary to meet their individual needs.

Salary:

PGY-1: $56,784.00

PGY-2: $57,499.60

PGY-3: $60,091.20

PGY-4: $62,337.60

Benefits package includes medical/dental/vision insurance, long-term disability insurance, retirement savings plan (with match of up to 3%), and additional voluntary benefits.

Paid time off: 3 weeks (15 workdays) vacation/PTO. Additionally, residents receive:

• Several holiday days off each year
• Two additional PTO days for any major holiday worked
• Five additional days for educational time off (to take Step/COMLEX exam, attend medical conferences, etc)

Parental Leave: OBGYN Residents receive paid parental leave (birthing and non-birthing parents) within the limits set by ABOG—up to 12 weeks in an academic year.

Parking: Free gated covered parking is provided in a garage attached to the hospital

Meal stipend: $300/month

• Can be used at hospital cafeteria and on-campus Starbucks, Au Bon Pain, Chick-fil-a and Subway restaurants

Exam fees: Prisma Health covers up to $700 of the fee for Step 3/COMLEX-3 exam if taken within the first 18 months of residency

Education funds: Separate from the above books and fees, residents receive the following discretionary education funds:

PGY-1: $500

PGY-2: $500

PGY-3: $1000

PGY-4: $2000

Travel: Residents may have travel expenses covered to present research at national conferences (in addition to the above education funds)

PGY-3 Conference: All third-year residents attend the ACOG Resident Retreat, funded by the program (in addition to the above education funds)

Certifications: Residents receive the following certifications at no cost: BLS, ACLS, NRP, and FLS

Licensure and Registration: Prisma Health covers the cost of residents’ state limited medical license and state and federal DEA registrations

Memberships: Residents receive memberships to ACOG and the South Carolina Medical Association

Boards Study Aids: Residents receive full access to the TrueLearn® Written Board Exam question bank for the final 6 months of residency as well as the last two weeks of residency off as dedicated study time.

Additional benefits:

• iPhone and phone case provided to every resident for professional responsibilities (used in place of pagers). Technical support provided by the IS Department.
