Ophthalmology Residency Columbia - Program Details
Clinical and research excellence
At Prisma Health, our three-year ophthalmology residency training program is poised to meet the changing needs of today's healthcare landscape. We select three residents annually and it is our goal to ensure that they receive comprehensive training in ophthalmology in order to prepare them to become excellent clinicians.
Rotations
Our program offers rotations in subspecialty clinics, continuity clinics and consultative ophthalmology. Residents work closely in these clinics with full-time faculty supervision and with local community-based ophthalmologists, thereby complementing the educational experience provided by our university-based attendings.
Rotations are structured to provide graduated responsibility at each level of training. Our third-year residents are afforded a great number of ophthalmic surgical procedures, in excess of 200 intraocular cases, to assure competence and confidence in performing various types of ocular surgery.
Research
Our clinical and basic science research departments, in collaboration with other departments within the medical school, have continually developed and secured NIH funding for clinically relevant projects in the areas of cornea, diabetes, glaucoma and retina.
Our residency program benefits from the diverse population of patients with wide ranging ophthalmic pathology that visit our practices. Our clinics accept referrals from throughout South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia, caring for more than 50,000 patients annually.
