All basic science topics and general orthopedic subjects are covered in our regular conference schedule. Each sub-specialty area is covered during the specific rotation as well as in the general conferences. Regular general and specialty journal clubs are held. Multiple educational seminars with invited guest professors are held each year. Subjects covered include:

Didactic Education

Regularly scheduled conferences with published curricula are held in basic science and clinical subjects. The majority of lectures are presented by attending faculty. Annual subspecialty OITE review sessions are presented by attending faculty as well.

Clinic Schedule

The residents have their own “profile” clinics throughout their residency to provide acute and long-term musculoskeletal care in a format that allows for continuity and building relationships with patients and their families.

Each subspecialty rotation includes dedicated time spent in the outpatient clinic setting.

Educational Meetings

Each year residents are provided with an academic allowance to support educational endeavors as approved by the academic chairman.

PGY-1 residents are sent to the OTA Resident Comprehensive Fracture Course*
PGY-2 residents are sent to the AANA Foundations in Arthroscopy Course*
PGY-3 residents are sent to the IPOS Course*
PGY-4 residents use their educational funds to attend conference of choice
PGY-5 residents often elect to attend a review course of their choice and/or attend the AAOS Annual Meeting

Evaluation Process

Evaluation of performance

The performance of orthopedic residents is monitored closely by faculty. Individual resident evaluations are assessed at the completion of each rotation. All residents (PGY-2 through PGY-5) are required to participate in the Orthopedic In-training Examination (OITE) program administered by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons each fall.

Education and assessment of core competencies

The residents receive appropriate education regarding the core competencies. This is done through evaluations, conferences, surgery, the annual OITE exam and special meetings/lectures. Each member of the academic staff is responsible for one of the core competencies to evaluate its implementation and to ensure compliance. Greenville Orthopedic Day

The department’s annual academic day, with lectures honoring J. Warren White, MD.
Dr. White was the first chief surgeon at Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville
The event involves prestigious and accomplished guest speakers who come to present didactic material in their area of expertise as well as discuss broader topics related to life in medicine and leadership within the medical community.
Greenville Orthopedic Day recurs annually on the third Friday in May.
The series began in 1975.

Orthopedic faculty, residents, and alumni of the program
Personnel from our institution’s OR, office staff, research staff and nursing units
Practicing orthopedic surgeons from across the region

Research

All residents are required to complete at least one research project during their residency with direct mentorship by a faculty member. They are required to write a study protocol or grant proposal, give one presentation at a state, national or regional scientific meeting, and have one publishable abstract. Residents are encouraged to participate in in additional research projects.

Residents are required to give a Grand Rounds presentation during their fifth year of residency.

The resident research experience ranges from basic science studies including biomechanical and cadaver studies, retrospective reviews and prospective randomized controlled trials.
