Orthopedic Surgery Residency Greenville - Training Components

PGY-1 (Intern year)

Interns rotate through multiple medical and surgical subspecialties, which include orthopedic surgery for six of the twelve months. This is broken down as follows:

  • Introduction to Greenville Orthopedics
  • Three 1-month rotations in Orthopedic Trauma
  • Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgery
  • Orthopedic Spine Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Radiology/Rehabilitation
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Critical Care

Additional Program features include:

  • Simulation and Skills labs
  • Casting Labs
  • Faculty led anatomic dissections

PGY-2 (1st year in Orthopedics)

During the PGY-2 year, residents have appropriate supervision and guidance while on-call but begin to exercise critical thinking and gain some autonomy with graduated responsibility. The extensive exposure to acute care during the intern year facilitates a smooth transition into the increased responsibilities of this PGY-2 year. The rotations are divided into three-month blocks to include:

  • Hand Surgery
  • Orthopedic Sports Medicine
  • Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery
  • Night Float/Orthopedic Trauma

PGY-3 (2nd year in orthopedics)

The PGY-3 year comes with even more autonomy. You are responsible for running your own respective services, which include:

  • Foot & Ankle (6 weeks) /Orthopedic Oncology(6 weeks)
  • Orthopedic Spine
  • Adult Arthroplasty
  • Orthopaedic Trauma/Night Float

PGY-4 (3rd in Orthopedics)

The PGY-4 year provides the resident growing operative autonomy along with the graduated responsibility of being the chief of their respective services on three of the four rotations; sharing responsibility with the PGY-5 with regard to running the Trauma service.

The rotations are once again, divided into three-month blocks in this year. The rotations include:

  • Orthopedic Trauma
  • Hand Surgery
  • Orthopedic Sports Medicine
  • Pediatric Orthopedics

Call responsibilities at this level are now “Chief” call.  It is home call that is shared with the PGY-5 class.  It averages out to be every 8th night and every 4th weekend.  The main call responsibility is to cover any emergent cases, but occasionally they help in the ER when needed.

PGY-5 (4th Year in Orthopedics)

Residents at this level will rotate on the following services:

  • Total Joints
  • Elective & Blue Ridge Sports Medicine-Clemson (6 weeks)/ Foot & Ankle (6weeks)
  • Orthopaedic Oncology (6 weeks) / Elective & Blue Ridge Sports Medicine-Clemson (6 weeks)
  • Orthopedic Trauma
