University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville

I grew up in Greenville SC and went to Clemson University for undergrad, majoring in microbiology while playing on the men’s soccer team. I then went to medical school here in Greenville at USCSOMG. Greenville is a beautiful city with close proximity to the lakes, mountains and beach all just a short drive away. I enjoy spending time on lake Keowee, golfing and going to Clemson football and soccer games in the fall. Our residency program offers an incredible operative experience with a tight knit group of residents, attendings and staff who make coming into work everyday a fun and educational experience.

Medical University of South Carolina

I grew up in Greer, SC and went to undergrad at Clemson University where I majored in Health Sciences and played on the men’s soccer team. After undergrad I went to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. I enjoyed my time living by the beach but I'm a lake guy at heart and enjoy spending time in lake Keowee. I've always loved the upstate and thought it would be a great place to live, but doing an away rotation at Greenville during my fourth year solidified my desire to come back for my residency training. During the rotation I saw the incredible learning environment created by engaged attendings and was able to see firsthand how confident and competent the residents here are as a result.

I am a Michigander born and raised in Whitehall, MI and eventually relocating to Grand Rapids, MI for my undergraduate and medical education (yes I do use my hand as a “mitten” to show people where I’m from). I met my husband, Jordan, at the beginning of medical school where we were classmates together at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He was my rock throughout all trials and tribulations that come with medical school. Our household is basically a zoo with our fur babies: 2 cats and a pup. I enjoy playing soccer, bouldering, camping and basically any outdoor activity. Both my husband and I had lived in West Michigan all our lives, and although we absolutely love it, we wanted to experience something new for a while. We were couples matching (orthopedics and emergency medicine), and Greenville had checked all of our boxes in terms of what we wanted in both of our programs and the city we were to live in. Orthopedics specifically has early operative experience, a large trauma volume, dedicated educators and faculty, and co-residents that guide you to success. It was an easy decision for us. We absolutely love it here and are so grateful we were able to match in such an amazing city with fantastic people.

University of Alabama School of Medicine

I was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. I attended the University of Alabama for undergraduate where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology. During my time at Alabama, I was lucky enough to see the Crimson Tide win two national championships and three SEC championships. I attended medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, AL. I rotated at Greenville during my fourth year of medical school and was immediately impressed by the program. The camaraderie between the residents was unmatched and their relationships with the attendings were genuine as they served as mentors both inside and outside of the hospital. I was also very impressed with the early operative experience (interns were frequently in the OR on trauma) and the appropriate resident autonomy. The city of Greenville is also beautiful and affordable as the cost of living allows residents to buy a house if they choose. There are ample amounts of outdoor activities as well as plenty of great restaurants and breweries. In my free time I enjoy watching sports, especially the Alabama Crimson Tide and the St. Louis Cardinals, as well as running, playing tennis and snow skiing.

Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University

I was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for undergrad. I attended East Carolina University for medical school and made the move from Greenville, NC to Greenville, SC for residency. My fiancĂ©e, Marion, and I decided on Greenville for many reasons. Greenville has the feel of a small town with its own personality, with all the opportunities afforded by living in a big city. The proximity to the mountains allows for weekend hiking and fly-fishing trips. Our program prioritizes early operative experience and encourages residents to get involved with patient care from day one. Coming to Greenville provides the opportunity to develop one on one mentorships with faculty members who will guide you throughout your journey to becoming an excellent orthopaedic surgeon. The focus on resident education is paramount to our program. In my spare time I love to fly fish and watch any and all sports. I am a die hard Carolina Panthers fan….Keep Pounding!

I grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, and attended THE University of South Carolina (Go Cocks!) I went to medical school here in Greenville at USCSOMG, and married my wife, Madi, shortly after graduation. We love living here with our yellow lab, Gunner, and enjoying all Greenville has to offer. In my free time I enjoy hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time with our families. Greenville provides great opportunities for all of these with its wide availability and close proximity to multiple lakes and mountains, while still being a short drive to the beach. Our program offers unmatched operative experience, faculty support, and resident camaraderie. Attendings and staff consistently go out of their way to provide additional opportunities for us and truly cater to a well-rounded experience.

I was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. I graduated from Auburn University (War Eagle!) with a degree in materials engineering and then attended medical school at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine in Birmingham, AL. I married my wife, Savannah, during medical school and we are thrilled to be in Greenville, SC. During my away rotation here, I was extremely impressed with the camaraderie between the residents and how they support each other unlike anywhere I have seen. The high-quality orthopedic training in Greenville is driven by faculty who are passionate about resident education as well as mentorship outside of the operating room. To me, this program felt like the “whole package” and being located in the thriving city of Greenville was a huge plus. In my free time I enjoy mountain biking, trail running, golfing, and traveling with my wife. Greenville’s close proximity to mountains and lakes provides ample opportunities for these activities and fun day trips.

Mercer University School of Medicine-Savannah

Originally from Athens, Georgia, I attended the University of Georgia for undergrad and went to Medical School at Mercer University School of Medicine (Savannah). My wife, JoAnna, and I chose Greenville because of the incredibly well rounded surgical and clinical education, hands on operative experience, camaraderie among the residents and faculty, research opportunities, and location. During my interview day, it was very clear to me how the program places a high importance on resident education, creating a cohesive work environment, and enjoying life both in and outside the hospital. Greenville offers all of the amenities of a big city without the busyness. Greenville has a terrific downtown scene, and there are a plethora of hiking trails, lakes and golf courses in the immediate surrounding area to enjoy.

I’m originally from Cleveland, OH but moved to South Carolina to attend the University of South Carolina for undergrad then the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville for Medical School. What I love about Greenville and our program is that we are one big family; always helping each other out inside and outside of the hospital. We have great relationships with all the attendings and most of our services are truly resident-run giving us a lot of responsibility early on. We also have amazing support staff and the hospital really takes care of its residents (ex: food stipend to help cover your meals while on service).

Sam Mellor, MD

Sam Mellor, MD

I was born and raised in Colfax, a small farming town in rural Eastern Washington. My first move across the country happened for undergrad when I attended school at Southern Virginia University. During college, I took a two-year hiatus to serve a church mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Northern Argentina. After graduating, I headed back west to attend the University of Washington School of Medicine but knew I wanted to get back to the Southeast. I was immediately drawn to the program in Greenville due to the hands-on operative experience, the breadth of clinical exposure, and the ability to tailor our learning to our interests, whether through research or clinical electives. Since arriving, the support I have felt from residents and attendings alike has only confirmed that Greenville was the right location for me. Outside of work, Greenville feels like a smaller city while also providing many amenities found in one much larger. The area offers access to multiple college and professional sports teams, numerous outdoor activities, and, most importantly, excellent southern food.

University of Florida College of Medicine

I was born in Martinsville, Virginia but moved to Tampa, Florida during middle school. I went to The University of Florida for both my undergraduate and medical education and really enjoyed my time in Gainesville (GO GATORS!). While I was at Florida, I met my wife, Taylor, and we got married just before residency began. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, golfing, and watching college football. We were both very excited to move to Greenville to start residency. I have always loved the town and think that it is a great area to live and learn in, regardless of your stage of life. The orthopedic surgery residency program at Prisma Health is a perfect fit for anyone who wants a balanced training with early operative experience and resources that will prepare you for any type of career available to you in orthopedics.

I’m from North Carolina and went to UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad and played beach volleyball. I went to ECU for medical school where two of my ortho mentors had graduated from Greenville. I got to see firsthand the quality of surgeons that Greenville produces, and I knew I’d continue to have great mentors to learn from. Greenville is the perfect size town- it has a fun downtown and social scene, but I was still able to get my dog a yard.  I was also immediately able to find a group to play volleyball and tennis with. My co-residents are awesome, and we’re always either headed downtown for drinks or cooking out at someone’s house.

University of Mississippi School of Medicine

I’m originally from St. Louis, Missouri. I attended Ole Miss for undergrad and pharmacy school, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center for medical school. I was incredibly lucky to rotate at Greenville for one of my away rotations as a fourth-year medical student and quickly realized it was right where I wanted to be for the next 5 years. Not only is Greenville an amazing place to live, the training here is incredible. The attendings love to teach and truly want to help us all become outstanding orthopaedic surgeons. The camaraderie between the residents is unmatched—we really are one big family! There is also an amazing group of support staff who will help you with anything you may need in residency. When I’m not at the hospital I love weightlifting and being outside. Greenville has endless opportunity for outdoor adventure from the Swamp Rabbit trail to nearby state parks, lakes, and mountains. The downtown area always has something going on too and there are so many great places to eat.  If you are looking for a program with excellent operative experience, supportive faculty, amazing coresidents, and a fantastic place to live, look no further. Please feel free to reach out any time with questions, I’d love to talk more about why Greenville is the best place you could choose for residency!

Melanie Patterson, MD

Melanie Patterson, MD

I was raised in Vestal, New York and earned my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where I also had the opportunity to play on the basketball team. I attended Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA, where I grew an interest in orthopedic surgery. I was looking for a residency program that would allow me to develop strong mentorship as well as camaraderie not only with my co-residents but also with attendings. After interviewing at Greenville, I was sure that this was the right program for me. The faculty’s involvement with the residency program and education was very evident, even while interviewing virtually. In my spare time, I enjoy running and biking outside, playing intramural sports, and spending time with family. Greenville definitely offers beautiful trails as well as a great downtown scene for anything you would want to do. Please reach out with any questions you may have!

Wake Forest School of Medicine of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center

I’m originally from Elkin, NC, and attended Wake Forest School of Medicine. My wife and I with our 2 dogs enjoy Greenville with the as there are tons of restaurants, bars, and outdoor activities, but it’s still a very affordable, clean, and convenient place to live. In my spare time, I enjoy hunting, Greenville Church League Basketball, and backyard farming with our garden and 3 chickens. What I love about our program is that all the residents and attendings truly “buy in” to the teaching-focused culture of the program. Attendings at Greenville are here because they want to train residents, and there is an expectation that teaching takes place at all levels in the program.

I am originally from Odessa, Texas. I attended Texas Tech University for undergrad (Wreck ‘em) and UT Health San Antonio for medical school. My wife, Baylee, is a nurse and we have a yellow lab named Tucker. My hobbies include watching all kinds of sports, being outdoors with my family, and traveling. Greenville absolutely stuck out as the place we wanted to be during away rotations and interviews. During my away rotation, I realized very early on how great the people are and how awesome the training is. It really checked all our boxes for residency and we couldn’t be happier to be here. Feel free to reach out with any questions about why I chose this program and why I think it’s one of the best places to be at.

Jeremy Wise, MD

Jeremy Wise, MD

University of Mississippi School of Medicine

Hi, I’m Jeremy, and I’m excited you’ve taken the time to navigate our website, explore the program, and learn a little more about us as individuals. I grew up in rural South Mississippi, attended The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and completed medical school in Jackson, MS at UMMC. I’m married to a beautiful wife that also works as an ICU nurse here at Greenville Memorial hospital, and we’ve got two small girls. Moving to Greenville to begin residency was honestly one of the best decisions I could’ve made for me and my family. To begin with, this orthopedic residency truly remains a gem with an outstanding reputation nationally for many reasons. Significant early operative experience with excellent one-on-one mentorship throughout most of our rotations. Our attendings take the time and effort to ensure our understanding as residents when it comes to clinical decisions down to individual surgical steps in any given operation. I would describe our culture as “work hard, play hard”, but even more so it’s an entire organization that loves to take care of people and do what’s right no matter the circumstance presented. With that said, no matter what your background is, if your desire is to gain comprehensive orthopedic experience in all subspecialty groups while enjoying resident and faculty camaraderie then this program deserves a close look. Not to mention, the city and surrounding region is a blast to enjoy during your spare time. It’s not a massive concrete jungle with terrible traffic like where many other well-known residency programs are located. Rather, it’s an ideal size for raising a family, has an explosively popular and energetic downtown with much to see and do, and the green space for outdoor living here is truly incredible. Mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, gorgeous freshwater lakes, are just a few things I enjoy during down time. My faith in Christ is a top priority for me and my family and we were able to find Grace Church, which is a strong group of community and international mission-minded believers that we enjoy weekly fellowship with. Cost of living is low in Greenville compared to the majority of the United States and stands as another benefit of being in this program while living on a resident salary. Additionally, we have access to a deeply discounted membership at The Life Center as residents, which is a large multifaceted fitness facility, located directly across the street from Memorial Hospital; the majority of us here utilize its amenities several times weekly. Overall, this orthopedic residency program located within the dynamic, thriving city of Greenville, South Carolina is a combination quite difficult to find as a medical student looking towards their next step in training. We sincerely hope that you will give our program a closer look and reach out to us if we can be of any assistance in your endeavors.

Emory University School of Medicine

I was born in Georgia, but have lived all over. My parents were medical missionaries, so we spent time living in Zimbabwe and Honduras when I was growing up. They now live in South Carolina, just an hour away from Greenville! I went to undergrad at North Greenville University and medical school at Emory School of Medicine. That’s where I met my husband, Josh, who is now a general surgery resident here at Prisma. I fell in love with the Greenville ortho residency during my interview day. The people I met were so kind, hard working, and seemed to be great friends inside and outside of work. It was evident to me that the residents who graduate from Greenville were very confident and competent orthopedic surgeons. I also felt like my passion for orthopedic medical missions would be supported by the faculty at Greenville. During my free time, I love spending time outside whether it be in the nearby mountains, lakes, or some of Greenville’s beautiful parks. I also enjoy watching college football (go dawgs!), baking, running, and spending time with my family and friends.

Zach Reynolds, MD

Zach Reynolds, MD

Born and raised in South Carolina, I attended Clemson University for undergrad and graduated from USC School of Medicine in Greenville, SC. I was fortunate enough to stay in Greenville for residency. My wife and I got married during my 3rd year of medical school. She has enjoyed working as an occupational therapist at the Shriners Hospital for Children here in Greenville. There are so many reasons why I wanted to complete my training here in Greenville, but the most important factor was the people! I was fortunate as a home institution medical student to witness the cohesive and education-focused environment the faculty and residents have created here. Seeing firsthand, the quality and volume of early operative experience that the junior residents received as well as the confidence and knowledge that the senior residents possessed was outstanding. I was looking for a program that not only advanced my training in orthopedics but also supported my wife throughout the process. These factors on top of having such well-rounded exposures to each orthopedic subspeciality throughout residency, including a strong trauma experience only confirmed my desire to continue my training in Greenville that much more. I enjoy golfing, lake days, running the Swamp Rabbit trail, Greenville Drive baseball games, and snow skiing. I was able to check-off a bucket list trip when I skied in the Austrian Alps before starting residency. Greenville has been an ideal city for my wife and I over the last 4 years. We have enjoyed having all the food options and attractions we could want without dealing with some of the bigger city headaches. Thank you for your interest in our program! I know finding “your fit” throughout the interview process can be challenging, especially in these times with limited personal contact due to COVID, but it would be my pleasure to talk more with anyone interested about why I truly believe Greenville was the best fit for me.
