00:19
our dedication to educational excellence
00:21
i think is something that really is
00:23
above and beyond what other programs can
00:25
offer for people
00:26
and what i mean by that is that we don't
00:28
settle for the surface value of things
00:30
that our program won't allow for our
00:32
trainees just to say
00:33
yeah i understand that and memorize
00:35
factoids we want everybody to understand
00:37
the why part of things
00:38
the why to take care of kids is always
00:40
the easy part of things in pediatrics
00:42
but understanding the why and the
00:44
disease process and the other things
00:46
that go into taking care of kids i think
00:48
is a big part of our
00:49
training program and something that all
00:52
of our faculty members
00:53
and even all of our residents i think
00:55
really appreciate and buy into
00:57
it's not always an easy thing to to have
00:59
to deal with illness and
01:01
in people but when you have a group of
01:04
people around you who really care about
01:05
each other
01:06
it makes all those things that much
01:07
easier to do
01:09
this kind of mid-sized 12-person program
01:11
is perfect
01:12
there are enough people to cover the
01:14
shifts that i'm not always
01:16
on call which is very nice my autonomy
01:18
has evolved
01:20
i am pretty capable of doing things like
01:22
this when at the beginning i didn't need
01:23
that much autonomy and
01:25
it's nice to always have somebody to
01:27
fall back on and someone asked questions
01:28
too but also to feel like you're really
01:30
improving and
01:31
getting to share that
01:34
if we have a procedure if you're on
01:36
hemank and you have a bone marrow biopsy
01:38
you're the one that does it because
01:39
there's no fellow there there's not
01:41
five or six people in hemon fighting for
01:43
it same thing if you're on nephrology
01:45
you do your kidney biopsies when we're
01:47
on the floor we do all our lumbar
01:48
punctures so i think that
01:50
the size has been perfect my typical day
01:52
usually involves waking up
01:54
pretty early and then coming into work
01:56
and sometimes it's a clinic day
01:57
typically get here around eight if we
02:00
have a clinic talk which will be
02:02
a talk by one of the residents or one of
02:04
the attendings on a topic
02:06
if we don't have a clinic talk i get
02:07
here at 8 30. see patients all morning
02:10
depending on how busy we are i may see
02:12
anywhere from four to seven
02:14
patients in the morning then we break
02:16
for lunch and we
02:17
normally have a lecture after lunch i'll
02:20
go back to seeing patients normally we
02:22
wrap up around 4 or 4 30
02:24
and we'll finish our notes for the day i
02:26
think for me
02:27
i've always felt very inspired by our
02:30
pediatric cancer patients and i just
02:33
last month
02:34
did my pediatric hematology and oncology
02:36
rotation
02:37
and they are just so inspiring to me
02:39
because they're going through
02:41
just absolutely unimaginable things
02:43
getting medicines that would make you or
02:45
i
02:46
not even want to get out of our beds and
02:48
they are
02:49
running around the hemok floor shooting
02:51
me with nerf guns
02:52
and painting my nails and they just
02:56
they just inspire me so much i think it
02:59
can't be
03:00
said enough how amazing the people here
03:02
are not just
03:03
my co-residents but my attendings
03:06
i have had attendings actually seek me
03:09
out with opportunities for me to
03:11
do research or write a book chapter with
03:13
them and i just think that's incredible
03:15
that
03:16
they bring things to us because they
03:18
want to make us better and want to give
03:19
us opportunities to grow and to learn
03:22
i am probably most proud of the fact
03:24
that it's not
03:25
my program that it's our program
03:29
it's a program that's been put together
03:32
by
03:32
the the people who have worked through
03:34
it and have come through it will come
03:35
through it too
03:36
and that's kind of what makes us who we
03:39
are as
03:39
is the past and all the people who've
03:41
helped to mold it into this amazing
03:43
place
03:44
that prepares people for general
03:45
pediatrics but also subspecialty
03:47
pediatrics and also looks to the future
03:50
and says what could we be doing better
03:52
for our trainees how could we be making
03:54
this better
03:54
and we don't just settle for hey we're
03:56
good enough it makes you feel like
03:58
you're a part of something bigger than
04:00
yourself and you're doing it for the
04:01
right reasons so that you train people
04:03
to take care of kids which is a real fun
04:05
thing to do and a joyful thing to do
04:08
but it really is a meaningful thing too

Our program’s emphasis is on developing pediatric residents into well-rounded physicians with a strong general pediatric background. We focus on the education of pediatric residents in both general and subspecialty practice to create an experience meant to meet the needs of today’s graduating resident, whether that leads to further training through fellowship or entrance into the workforce in primary care.
