Didactics

Prisma Health Pediatrics Residency Columbia

Our pediatric didactic series has been designed with today's learner in mind.

Based on the content specifications of the American Board of Pediatrics initial certifying examination the learning sessions are centered on providing education that prepares residents both for performance in the clinical setting as well as ultimately for success in achieving board certification.

Schedules of alternating weekly clinical didactics provided by pediatric faculty followed by weekly non-clinical didactics focusing on personal/professional development, wellness, and academic readiness

  • Didactic grouping of topics to better help residents focus their individualized learning and self-study.
  • Completion of the full didactic series in 18 months to allow for reinforcement of materials twice during the three years of residency training to allow for flexibility should residents miss didactics due to vacation, call, illness, etc.
  • Recording and archiving of clinical didactics to allow for asynchronous learning and review at each residents individual pace/need.
Unique aspects of our didactics
  • Weekly patient management conference led by UofSC School of Medicine vice chair of education and pediatric sub-specialists.
  • Scheduled didactic time set aside to obtain mid-rotation feedback each academic block.
  • Monthly journal clubs hosted by our resident houses with critical appraisal of relevant and timely evidence based medicine with faculty preceptors.
  • Monthly board review sessions focusing on specific pediatric topics led by UofSC School of Medicine vice chair of education and pediatric sub-specialists.
  • Twice-monthly wellness focus with general and emotional wellness sessions lead by residency coordinators.
  • Quarterly informal PGY class meeting with program director.
  • Quarterly diversity, equity, and inclusion discussions led by faculty and residents.
  • Annual workshops to improve procedural skills, documentation skills, and code preparedness.
  • Six sessions per year geared toward education regarding practice management and the business aspect of physician practice.
