Prisma Health Pediatrics Residency Columbia

Ever evolving, our program seeks to train pediatricians who are prepared for practice today and into the future. Our team strives to offer new and innovative educational opportunities for trainees in a variety of areas including assessment, medical technology and instruction.

Pediatric Bedside Ultrasound Curriculum

Through our partnership with the Ultrasound Institute at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia, we are proud to offer our trainees the unique ability to learn the basics of Pediatric Bedside Ultrasound. Resuming soon, trainees will be given hands-on instruction in bedside ultrasound under faculty guidance in general and subspecialty settings, helping to enhance and augment their diagnostic and procedural skills through the use of this novel medical technology.

New England Journal of Medicine Knowledge+

Partnering with New England Journal of Medicine, we are able to offer our residents the NEJM Knowledge+ training program. Designed to help residents and programs recognize strengths and knowledge gaps in pediatric medicine, this educational software is provided for all trainees up until they take the ABP certifying exam following graduation each fall.

Selective Individualized Curriculm

Four weeks of tailored individual curriculum created for each resident during their third year. Designed to help prepare them for future practice focusing on areas of need/desire in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

PGY-3 Pediatric Senior Seminar

To prepare graduates for lifelong learning after graduation, each third-year resident is tasked with presenting a Pediatric Senior Seminar (under faculty guidance) on a topic of their choice during their final year of training. Typically some of the best presentations each year, they cover a wide range of subjects, from clinical topics such as mercury toxicity and poisoning, to timely non-clinical topics such as “Gangs in South Carolina and How Medical Professionals Interact with Them.”

Inpatient Teaching Rounds

Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., our inpatient team of residents, students and pharmacists participate in a "mini-morning report" case-based discussion led by pediatric hospital medicine faculty. The goal being to discuss key historical elements, physical exam findings and diagnostic and therapeutic workup to help in real time learning of patients being currently cared for.

Wellness Rotation

This newly developed rotation has been created to give PGY - 3 residents the opportunity to improve their own personal wellness along with the wellness of their peers. PGY - 3 residents will be given the opportunity to seek out wellness related activities, improve self reflection and work on scholarly activity while also providing coverage to aid co-residents in seeking out much needed "time away" to handle needed appointments. All while having no call or scheduled clinical activities.

Scholarship Oversight Committees

To help prepare and guide busy residents interested in scholarly activity, be it writing book chapters or case reports, publishing manuscripts, developing novel curriculum, or presenting and regional or national meetings. Our scholarship oversight committee meet 3x yearly with residents performing various scholarly projects to help guide them toward completion providing an added layer of support and oversight to prepare them for success during training and in the future.
