Pediatrics Residency Columbia - Director's Welcome

Thank you for your interest in our program.

Welcome to the Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Pediatric Residency Program webpage.  We, as a program, are excited to continue to build upon the past successes of our training program while looking to new and innovative ways to provide a safe and effective learning environment for each of our residents. The program here at Prisma Health will always hold a special place in my heart and our hope is that it inspires the same passion in our graduates as they look back on their time with us.

My story with our Prisma Health Pediatric Residency Program begins back in 2006 as a fourth-year medical student. Having grown up, lived in and studied in Ohio my entire life, I was ready for a change when it came to my residency training. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a month at Palmetto Health (now Prisma Health) in the outpatient clinic as a visiting acting intern. My expectations were, honestly, pretty low, having never been to Columbia before. What came after was an experience like I could have never imagined. I quickly came to realize the dedication, not only to teaching and education, but to how residents and medical students were welcomed into the “family” of Prisma Health. The relationships I was able to make in that short month stuck with me, not only through the remainder of my fourth year but, as it turns out, through the rest of my life, and when it came time to submit my rank list, there was no doubt where I wanted to be.

What followed were a whirlwind three years of laughter, joy and occasional tears, but mostly unforgettable memories of residency training here at Prisma Health. That was followed by the opportunity to stay on as a fourth-year chief resident and thereafter as a faculty member. Eventually, family led my wife, children and I back to Ohio briefly to create and run the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. But something always seemed to be missing, and that was the family I had found here at Prisma Health through faculty, staff, students and residents new and old.

Our program has undergone some fantastic resident driven changes over the past 3 years when it comes to innovative curricular ideas and plans; advocacy and outreach programs, a renewed dedication to resident quality improvement and research, as well as focus on resident wellness and togetherness. Through our changes two things remain the heart of our program: a dedication to education focusing on creating at their core residents who are outstanding pediatricians, and the sense of becoming a part of our family both during training and afterwards. Our program strives to continue the tradition of excellence and togetherness exemplified by its many years of success both regionally and nationally.

We look forward to hearing from interested applicants who want to learn more about the amazing things we are doing here at Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Pediatric Residency Program. We hope to share our excitement with you for what the present as well as the future has in store.

Best Wishes,
