hi i'm amanda hartke and i'm a pediatric

hospitalist with prisma health and i'm

the program director for the pediatric

residency here in greenville south

carolina

one of the unique aspects of our program

is that we have an almost 50 50 balance

of inpatient and outpatient and that

really lets our residents get a solid

foundation in general pediatrics but

also have the flexibility to truly

individualize their curriculum it also

allows us to prioritize resident

education and wellness

greenville residents get early exposure

to the breadth of pediatrics which

really allows them to decide on their

career path

even as interns they're going to do

rotations in the nicu and the picu which

lets them see the high acuity sickest of

the sick patients on our pediatric wards

they're going to see all the

subspecialties and interact directly

with faculty during their clinic months

they're going to see community-based

pediatric clinical care and really

explore advocacy

our residents not only get breadth of

exposure to pediatrics they're really

encouraged to take a primary role and

get that progressive autonomy in patient

care decisions we want them to take that

lead role

and to feel comfortable in it but always

to know that there's faculty right there

behind them if they need support help

second year

the size of the program

was a huge reason i came here and has

continued to be a reason that i want to

be here

you quickly gain trust from your

attendings because you know them also

personally and everyone's on a first

name basis so it's much easier for them

to grab you whenever something's going

on so i've been able to do a lot of

hands-on procedures

i think what gets me through tough days

is one starbucks because we get money to

that we can use for starbucks so some

coffee and then just the people that

you're able to be around and you know

everyone's so close and we're all going

through the same thing so it's really

easy to lean on other residents or

attendings and faculty and know that you

have a lot of support

greenville was kind of like the cherry

on top i think of the program tons of

art there's events happening all the

time there's lots of food the downtown's

really walkable it's very affordable too

i'm dr brittany williams i'm a second

year pediatric resident at prison health

upstate when i came to interview here

i really felt that

who i am as an individual was very

important to this program and my future

goals were priority everyone was always

trying to make sure that i was aware of

things that fit my personal goals

as well as i was able to see that a lot

of the residents had good personal

relationships with each other where i

felt i could be connected to a group of

people and not get lost in a large

number of people

but i also wanted somewhere that was

large enough to where i got a good

amount of experience coming here a lot

of the residents that are graduating are

matching into fellowship programs

at large institutions even and so i felt

like the door is wide open even if i do

make that choice

to go somewhere

as large as i want into a fellowship if

that's what i desire

high level expectation for learning here

and i have been pleasantly surprised by

that even from all the way to our

pediatric intensivists they expect you

to know your patients well and also to

learn from your patients and to be able

to give the team good sound

evidence-based information about what we

should do for our patients and your

input is important it's not brushed

aside you are really an important part

of the team

two-thirds of our residents go into

general pediatrics and that can mean a

mix of outpatient inpatient academic and

teaching roles the other third end up

pursuing fellowships and match into

competitive specialties all over the

country

many of them fall in love with

greenville though so they end up coming

back here to practice and to live

our residents really see this program as

their own and they know that they are

part of its success and its future and

that their ideas will be supported and

implemented

we have a minimum number of physician

extenders and fellows so residents get

to be that primary person making medical

decisions they get that faculty

one-on-one mentorship to really come out

the other side feeling trained

for those of you that interview with us

we can't wait to tell you more about our

people our patients and our city and

what an amazing place this is to train

for pediatric residency
