Residency application review and interview selection
We know how many hours each of you invests preparing your applications. It is important to us to find out who you are, beyond just your numbers (even if you crushed your exams), so we also invest our time in thoroughly reading the applications we receive.
Applicants are offered interviews based on a holistic review, seeking those with experiences, skills and attributes that will contribute to the patients we serve and to our learning/training environment. This includes applicants that demonstrate dedication to excellence and compassion in patient care, ability to work within and lead a medical team, commitment to areas of interest such as advocacy or medical education, and response to challenges in both life and medicine. We include standardized test scores as a component of our review but recognize that a single test does not predict physician excellence and so have not set minimum scores.
We offer interviews on a rolling basis throughout the interview season based on these reviews and our available dates. We are dedicated to not extending more interview offers than available spots, as we understand this is a stress of source for applicants. In order to accomplish this, we ask that any applicants that receive an interview offer complete their scheduling process within a week of the receiving the invite. If you have a strong interest in our program or ties to the area that are not obvious in your application, we encourage you to reach out to us. This information also helps us plan our interview visits, including showing our applicants around Greenville.
- Applications are reviewed from through December 31st.
- We require a completed ERAS form, personal statement, and transcript before we review your application.
- We require students to have passed USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 to be considered for an interview. We require Step 2 / Level 2 pass prior to rank consideration. Osteopathic applicants are encouraged but not required to submit USMLE transcripts if available.
- We require three letters of recommendation. These should be from individuals who know you well and are in a position to comment on your skills, abilities, accomplishments and suitability for a residency program. We do not require a chair letter.
- Some applications may be put on hold until we receive the Medical Student Performance Evaluation/Dean’s Letter.
- We welcome all applicants and do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, veteran status or sexual orientation.
Interview for the 2024-2025 match season
Per AAMC recommendations, we will be conducting virtual interviews for this season. Once you are selected for an interview, you will receive additional interview materials, information about our program, and scheduling details for virtual faculty interviews and opportunities to get to know our residents.
Requirements for international medical graduates
Applicants from international medical schools must have graduated within the last 3 years and have a permanent visa. You must also have experience in the U.S. (rotations, graduate studies, or at least 6 months of clinical training). Observerships do not fulfill this requirement.
