Pediatrics Residency Greenville - Educational Opportunities

Building a career in pediatrics extends far beyond the clinical training of residency and the knowledge needed to pass the boards. Pediatric physicians also become leaders in their field, educators, advocates, and researchers, in addition to cultivating their personal and family lives. Residents are encouraged to explore these interests through involvement in clinical research and quality improvement projects, our longitudinal advocacy curriculum, teaching opportunities, and international rotations.

Our goal is to nurture a resident interest in these areas through faculty mentorship and program support.

At Prisma Health, advocacy is both an integral part of the pediatric residency and the hospital as a whole. Faculty and residents alike are active at the local, state and national level on issues that affect the well-being of children. Through the longitundinal advocacy curriculum, residents develop the skills to make advocacy a part of their lives and careers beyond residency.

During their second year, our pediatric residents work in teams along with a faculty mentor on a quality improvement project of their choice. Through this process they become familiar with study design and implementation, PDSA cycles, and IRB protocol submission.  

At the beginning of their 3rd year, residents submit their projects as poster presentations for the annual South Carolina AAP conference.  Our Pediatric and Med/Peds resident pairs have taken top honors among SC residency programs for the past several years with project topics focused on Tobacco Cessation, Inpatient DKA Management standardization, Implementation of an Early Onset Sepsis Calculator, and improving utilization of postpartum birth control with LARC placement by pediatric providers.

Regardless of whether our residents go into private practice, academic teaching positions, or fellowships, each of them will have a role as educators. Some may focus on educating their patients and parents while others may be tasked with leading rounds or lecturing to residents and students.

All of our pediatric residents receive training and experience in teaching through:

• Experience leading informal small group morning talks in the outpatient clinic
• Experience precepting for outpatient clerkship students in senior “Clinic Chief” month
• Resident-led Morning Reports and Grand Rounds presentations with support of faculty mentors for both content and teaching style
• Noon conference sessions dedicated to public speaking and teaching to adult learners
• Rising PG2 and PG3 retreat sessions covering teaching as an upper level
• Optional workshops by the Office of Professional Development at U of SC School of Medicine Greenville including sessions on keeping learners engaged and motivated, interactive teaching techniques using technology, factors impacting learning, and meta-cognition.

As worldwide communities become more interconnected, a growing number of residents have an interest in global health. International rotations provide a unique opportunity for residents to not only provide care in some of the world’s most resource limited areas, but also to develop their own clinical skills and understanding of social determinants of health. Our hospital has been very supportive of global health trips and residents may participate in as many as two month long trips during residency. Residents are encouraged to participate in established rotation sites, to continue working with sites they visited prior to residency, or to explore new locations. Residents have undertaken a variety of international trips to provide medical care and relief around the world.  Some of the most popular established global health experiences include Brazil, Guatemala and Kenya.
