Residency Advising Tracks: At the end of intern year, residents choose one of three advising “tracks” based on career interests. These tracks provide a suggested guideline so residents can truly individualize their educational experience and curriculum to match their career goals in Primary Care, Inpatient Pediatrics, or Pediatric Subspecialties.
Career Exploration: In addition to clinical training tracks, residents may choose elective rotations that further prepare them for careers involving Medical Education, Research / Quality Improvement, Advocacy, Global Health, and other interests.

Elective Rotations

We have more than 100 medical and surgical pediatric subspecialists who train and mentor and prepare our residents for general practice, academic medicine, or the fellowship of their choosing. Except for the required rotation in Hematology-Oncology as an intern, no electives are predetermined for you. This gives you flexibility for a truly individualized curriculum. In addition to these standard electives, residents have chosen to develop their own rotations as part of their individualized curriculum with associated objectives and faculty mentorship. Inpatient Pediatrics

Resident-led inpatient teams care for all pediatric patients admitted for medical issues, all neurosurgical patients, as well as some other surgical subspecialty patients. Residents gain familiarity with patients that would commonly be cared for by pediatric hospitalists including those with common pediatric problems, those with subspecialty issues, and those with significant medical complexity. Our residents help drive the care of the patients from start to finish – taking admission calls from PCPs and ERs, speaking directly to consulting physicians, initiating the care plan, performing procedures, and communicating with patients and families. Supervising residents are given progressive autonomy in patient care decisions and also guide the learning of junior residents and medical students.

Ambulatory Clinic

Residents complete their outpatient general pediatrics requirements in the Center for Pediatric Medicine (CPM Main) and the North Greenville Oupatient Center(NGOC). All residents spend a portion of their outpatient time at CPM Main (the largest Medicaid clinic in the state with 50k visits/year). Some residents have the opportunity to have their primary clinic days at NGOC. This location is especially attractive to residents considering more rural medicine in their future careers. In their ambulatory clinic roations, residents gain comfort with general well child and acute care visits, as well as clinic days dedicated to specific panels of patients/services including our Asthma Program, Well and Drug Exposed Newborn Clinics, Psychiatric Care Clinic, and clinic visits for NYAP Temporary Medical Homes for Unaccompanied Minors entering the US. Newborn Nursery

In the Newborn Nursery, residents gain familiarity with term newborn care as well as proficiency in circumcision, breastfeeding/lactation support, and care of infants born with opioid-dependence. Prisma Health Upstate is nationally recognized for proactive treatment of opioid-dependent newborns through the Managing Abstinence in Newborns (MAiN) Program and residents become familiar with the presentation, management and prognosis for these infants. We are also proud to be designated a Baby Friendly hospital by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Neonatal ICU

The dedicated and enthusiastic teaching from faculty together with high volume and acuity patient care has made the NICU a favorite rotation among residents and a common choice for fellowship / careers! Through recurring half day teaching sessions including skill labs and simulation, along with bedside teaching, delivery and resuscitation experience, procedural training, and even exposure to the new “Small Baby Unit” caring for infants under 1kg or <28 weeks gestation, residents are introduced to an often intimidating clinical area with a supportive curriculum designed for their success.

Pediatric ICU

Residents rotate through the PICU beginning in their intern year. This early exposure is important for those considering fellowship and for developing triage and stabilization skills that are valuable for all our trainees. Our unit is expanding to 16 beds this year and admits both medical and surgical critical care patients. There are no fellows in the unit, and residents take the lead in both clinical management and procedures including placement of central lines, intubation, lumbar puncture, and even bedside neurosurgical procedures. The PICU also supports a pediatric transport team and accepts patients from the entire upstate of South Carolina and portions of neighboring states, resulting in a variety of acute and complex patient care exposures for residents on this rotation.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine

The Children’s Emergency Center (CEC) is a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center with ~29,000 visits a year and is staffed by pediatric emergency trained physicians, nurses, technicians and child life specialists. Residents develop comfort with rapid triage and assessment as well as procedural skills.

Adolescent Medicine

Residents spend most of their Adolescent Medicine rotation at the Prisma Health Adolescent Medicine office on Cleveland Street, as well as Adolescent visit panels at primary clinc sites. They are immersed in the care of adolescents and young adults and address common adolescent concerns like reproductive health, sexual health, eating disorder management and mental health. Additional clinical experiences include School-based health centers, Pediatric and Adolescent gynecology, the Juvenile Detention Center, Inpatient Consults, Pediatric Pain Management, Primary care sports medicine, and Transition from pediatric to adult care.

The Prisma Health Center for Pediatric Medicine is the largest Medicaid clinic in the state, serving more than 20,000 patients and 50,000 visits annually across the 4 sites (CPM Main, CPM West, North Greenville Outpatient Center, and The Ferlauto Center for Complex Pediatric Care).

Center for Pediatric Medicine (CPM-Main)
- All residents complete their general pediatric clinic rotation blocks at CPM Main
- Conveniently located across the street from the Children’s Hospital
- Patient demographics:
  - 37% Hispanic/Latinx, 31% White, 30% Black/African American, 1% Asian
  - Patients with >25 primary languages spoken including 28% with Spanish language preference
- Well and Acute visits plus Specialty Clinics offered including:
  - NYAP Temporary Medical Home for Unaccompanied Minors entering the US

  - Psychiatric Care / Behavioral Clinic

North Greenville Outpatient Center (NGOC)
- Optional longitudinal clinic site for residents interested in rural / community health training
- Serves the smaller community of Travelers Rest (~20 min drive from the Children’s Hospital)

Community Health and Engagement through CPM Clinics
- Our clinics are involved in numerous programs advocating for our community including Lifestyle Medicine family educational sessions in the Rica Salud/Rich Health Club, Reach out and Read, Foodshare-Greenville (distribution site for seasonal, locally-grown fruits and veggies purchasable with $5 of SNAP/EBT benefits), and Family Connections resources for those with chronic medical issues.

Include outpatient offices for most of the Children’s Hospital specialties including cardiology, developmental behavioral pediatrics, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, nephrology & hypertension, neurology, ophthalmology, pain medicine, pulmonology, rheumatology, sleep medicine and urology.
