Pediatrics Residency Greenville - Wellness and Social Activities

From the day our interns arrive, we want the residency program to feel like a family. This starts with an approachable faculty that our residents come to know on a first name basis, but it extends much farther. Throughout the year, there are both program-supported and resident-planned activities that reinforce the friendships that develop among the residents. At graduation, residents leave with not only excellent clinical skills, but relationships with both faculty and other residents that last a lifetime.

Integrating Wellness into the Curriculum

As physicians, we need to care for not only our patients but ourselves. Every month residents have a “Social Lunch” as part of the noon conference series. They recharge with scheduled events like painting ceiling tiles for the work rooms, ice cream socials, watching Scrubs and eating popcorn, or just a chance to eat together outside in the healing garden.

We have also added “Wellness Afternoons” during electives, reading half-days to clinic months, and increased the days off for interns on inpatient wards to balance the demands of resident life. Finally, our residents are encouraged to take advantage of PICU debriefs by our supportive care staff, decompress with our therapy dogs, and utilize the available Employee Assistance Program for counseling if needed. We also make it a point to schedule times so that an entire class can get together outside of work. Sometimes it’s just the afternoon. For the PGY3s, it’s a weekend together at the SC AAP conference.

Mentor Houses

Emerging from the isolation of COVID19 lockdown, both our residents and faculty wanted more of a connected community and our Mentor Houses were the answer. After a "sorting hat" announcement ceremony during match day 2022, each of our Peds and MedPeds residents was assigned to one of our three houses - Osk, Nelson, and Zitelli. Our amazing faculty (about 9 per house) help organize events outside of work. Favorite events so far have included Greenville Drive baseball games, Artisphere outings downtown, Gather Greenville music bingo night, roller skating, and pool parties. We also have a friendly competition for the annual "House Cup" earned with points for our work hard/play hard activities recognizing everything from presenting at a meeting to a champagne tap to self care or exercise. Check out the slideshow below for pictures of our houses and some recent events.

Intern Retreat

During orientation week, incoming interns join their upper levels at a resident-selected local destination. Graduating residents cover the majority of clinical duties so that interns can get to know not only each other but their upper level residents and chiefs.

Winter Resiliency Retreat

Mid way through the year, we all need a break! Residents, faculty, and their families get together for a relaxed evening away from the hospital.

End of the Year Banquet and Graduating Resident Dinner

Two events mark the completion of residency for our graduating class. All faculty and residents gather for the End of the Year Banquet which includes recognition of our graduates, a video skit “roast” of the graduates by the intern and PGY2 classes, and resident awards. The graduating class and their significant others also join faculty they select for a dinner to celebrate completion of their training with the mentors that helped them along the way.

More glimpses into our residency family

The friends you make in residency are with you far beyond the end of your shift and even beyond the three years you spend here. Whether just getting together for coffee, or celebrating holidays and life events together, they are a part of your life inside and outside of the hospital. The Prisma Health system is also home to more than 20 other residency and fellowship program, and our pediatric residents’ friendships extend to this this large and active group of young professionals.
