Preventive Medicine Residency Columbia - Director's Welcome

Thank you for your interest in our program.

We offer an accredited two-year training in general preventive medicine and public health, uniquely positioned in the state capital of South Carolina, Columbia. Our central location provides an exceptional opportunity for our residents to engage directly with state-level public health agencies, government offices, and key decision-makers. The proximity to the University of South Carolina and its vast academic, clinical, and research resources further enhances our program's capacity to foster comprehensive and diverse training experiences.

Our program emphasizes leadership development as a critical component of preventive medicine. To this end, we offer a didactic curriculum on leadership development that includes workshops, seminars, and mentorship opportunities with leaders in public health, healthcare systems, and academia. Our residents benefit from strategic partnerships with state-level agencies, including the South Carolina Department of Public Health, allowing them to work on public health initiatives that impact the entire state. Our connection with the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health provides additional avenues for leadership development through its Master of Public Health coursework, which is fully funded by our program.

We are also proud to incorporate the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) Residency Curriculum into our program. This comprehensive curriculum equips our residents with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to practice lifestyle medicine effectively. By completing this curriculum, residents have the opportunity to meet the requirements to sit for the ACLM certification exam at the end of their residency, further enhancing their credentials and ability to promote evidence-based lifestyle interventions in clinical and community settings.

Our program has a strong partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine's Center for Rural and Primary Healthcare. This collaboration provides residents with unique opportunities to work directly on initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes in rural communities. Through this partnership, residents gain hands-on experience addressing healthcare disparities and engaging in innovative projects that support primary care and public health in underserved areas.

Our program is committed to cultivating board-certified general preventive medicine and public health practitioners who are not only skilled in clinical and public health practice but are also equipped to assume leadership roles across various settings. The dynamic environment of Columbia, with its blend of governmental, academic, and community resources, provides a fertile ground for developing these competencies.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about the breadth of opportunities offered by our training program. Should you have any questions about our program or the specialty of preventive medicine, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Mark Humphrey, MD, MPH
