Promoting diverse experiences and academic excellence
The Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia General Psychiatry Residency Program is the outgrowth of a unique partnership between academic and public psychiatry. Our training program emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach to mental health services, promotes academic excellence, engages residents in research and teaching, and provides diverse rotation experiences.

00:17
our priorities
00:18
are to provide a solid educational
00:21
experience
00:22
along with scholarly activity as well as
00:25
different things that residents can use
00:27
lifelong so we want to teach them to be
00:30
self-directed learners lifelong learners
00:33
we want to
00:34
emphasize residents as teachers and we
00:36
want them to be able to practice
00:38
wherever they choose after graduation
00:40
and feel well prepared to do so
00:42
we actually allow them to choose
00:44
electives to customize some experiences
00:47
if they let us know for example that
00:49
they're interested in a particular
00:51
diagnosis or patient population
00:53
we allow them to see those patients in
00:55
an outpatient setting in an inpatient
00:57
setting
00:58
and set up electives so residents really
01:00
have the opportunity to customize
01:02
experiences and and really foster their
01:05
own personal
01:06
interests the level of autonomy in our
01:08
program
01:09
is is an upward slope by the end of
01:11
intern year
01:12
you feel pretty capable of handling
01:16
most basic stuff on your own and even
01:18
some of the more challenging stuff
01:20
second year which is what jade's doing
01:22
right now you
01:23
you see patients and then you may check
01:25
in at the end of the week
01:26
typically with a supervisor but in the
01:28
moment you're the one making those
01:30
decisions
01:31
on interacting with patients and then in
01:33
third year when you return back to more
01:35
inpatient settings you're essentially
01:38
treated as a junior attendee
01:41
it escalates appropriately throughout
01:43
the years
01:45
a typical day for me as a current pgy2
01:50
is me coming into clinic kind of
01:52
reviewing the patients that i have on my
01:55
schedule for the day
01:56
you know updating myself on what we
01:58
talked about at their last visit
02:00
medication changes and things like that
02:03
and then
02:04
just seeing those patients throughout
02:05
the day kind of back to back
02:07
writing notes in between as i have time
02:09
there are certainly some
02:10
challenging moments throughout the day
02:14
but i think that one of the things that
02:16
helps me get through is
02:17
having those patients who you know i see
02:20
getting better
02:21
and who you know value our relationship
02:25
and i can see that i'm making a
02:26
difference one of the first things that
02:29
is unique about our program is the
02:30
diversity of our clinical sites
02:33
so our residents rotate within the state
02:35
department of mental health
02:36
the veterans administration different
02:38
prisma health locations
02:40
the department of corrections and other
02:42
community institutions
02:44
and so they really get to see everything
02:46
and go a lot of different places see
02:48
systems and patients and i think that's
02:50
really enriching for them
02:52
we actually go to bryant psychiatric
02:54
hospital kirkland correctional facility
02:56
so we see a lot of different places
02:57
there's a lot of different
02:59
you know settings to treat patients in i
03:01
think that's really important to see how
03:03
other health systems are operating
03:06
another thing that we have also is we
03:07
have really good fellowships that really
03:09
enrich our general training and that's
03:11
in child adolescent psychiatry
03:13
forensic psychiatry and geriatric
03:15
psychiatry we have a longitudinal
03:17
wellness
03:18
program for the residents we have lots
03:20
of opportunities for scholarly activity
03:22
and we have really good didactics really
03:25
good teachers as well
03:26
when i was selecting a residency program
03:29
i think the most important factor
03:31
for me was feeling like the people that
03:33
i train with are like family
03:35
now that i am a resident i can say that
03:38
i experience
03:39
that camaraderie every day from walking
03:42
into
03:42
my colleague's office and having a chat
03:44
walking to lunch together
03:46
to texting day and night to you know
03:48
hanging out with each other on the
03:49
weekends
03:50
if i could offer one piece of advice to
03:53
applicants this year then i would say
03:57
put your best self forward but remember
03:59
to be yourself
04:01
because ultimately you want to feel like
04:04
the program accepts you for who you are
04:20
you
Our curriculum is greatly enriched by early exposure to subspecialties, and the expertise provided by our child and adolescent, geriatric and forensic psychiatry fellowship programs. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and accepts eight residents each year.
