Psychiatry Residency Columbia - Diversity and Inclusion
Our goal is for the diversity of the program to match the rich diversity of our community.
We desire to actively recruit diverse residents and teaching faculty. Faculty are carefully selected by the program for teaching activities and feedback is reviewed on a regular basis. Consideration is given for the potential faculty member’s expertise, diversity, unique perspectives, and the patient populations that are served. Community psychiatrists are also approached individually to provide didactics on various aspects of practice and cultures. The residency curriculum includes didactic content on disparities in healthcare, implicit and explicit bias, subcultures in South Carolina, systemic racism, sexuality and gender and cultural competence. The residency program also has an active anti-racism task force.
Residents at every level of training are expected to treat all members of the health care team with respect, and to recognize the value of contributions from others involved in the care of patients and their families. The highest level of professionalism is expected at all times.
