Psychiatry Residency Columbia - How to Apply

Application information

First-year appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program and applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are selected for interview based on their USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, medical school transcript, personal statement, and MSPE/Dean's letter.

International medical graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate as well as have licensure in the state of South Carolina prior to the anticipated beginning training on July 1. Additional requirements include successfully passing the USMLE exams, Part I and Part II, and successfully passing the clinical skills assessment test. One year of experience in some activity in a medical setting in the United States is preferred.

The deadline for application is specified by ERAS. Interviews are scheduled from November through January, meeting established NRMP deadlines.

Applications must have all elements required by ERAS, including:

• A brief statement detailing your interest in psychiatry.
• Medical school transcript.
• MSPE/Dean's letter (national policy requires that the dean's letter be released no sooner than November 1 of each year; thus, interviews will be granted before receipt of the dean's letter, provided that the remainder of the application materials have been received).
• Three letters of recommendation, preferably at least one from non-psychiatry faculty and one from a psychiatrist.

Interviews will be scheduled only after the ERAS application is complete, with the exception of USMLE/COMLEX step 2. Sometimes, interviews may be offered prior to having all three letters of recommendation submitted. It is preferred that all letters have been submitted before the interview day. Applicants will not be ranked to match at the completion of the interview season if USMLE/COMLEX steps 1,2 and CS/PE are not all complete and returned as passing. These materials must be satisfactory and the applicant must be qualified to obtain a South Carolina State Medical Board License before an interview is scheduled. Note: For non-recent medical school graduates, a record of work in the clinical field within the past two years is required.
