Psychiatry Residency Columbia - Mission Statement
Program aims
The Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia General Psychiatry Residency Program strives to provide an educational and scholarly environment that will train qualified and competent individuals in the field of psychiatry. We aim to produce psychiatrists who are both knowledgeable and confident in all areas of psychiatry, including patient care, research, clinical teaching, and systems development, and who are also prepared to complete the process for board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
Clinical programs within the residency are designed to emphasize training in both psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological interventions. Residents participate in scholarly activity through didactics, individual research studies, quality improvement projects, Journal Clubs, and evidence-based medicine presentations. Clinical teaching is introduced through formalized teaching and further developed through practical experiences in collaboration with the medical school and mentorship of junior level residents. Ownership in personal learning, self-reflection, and self-directed learning strategies are encouraged and incorporated longitudinally across the curriculum.
