Established in 1963, the four-year general psychiatry training program includes diverse training sites and distinct rotations that prepare residents to practice in any setting. In addition to a solid foundation in adult inpatient psychiatry, the program has developed unique clinical experiences for residents.

The residency program includes early exposure to ambulatory psychiatry with an emphasis on training in both psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological interventions as well as early subspecialty rotations. Longitudinal clinics, integrated clinics, a student health center rotation, telepsychiatry, emergency psychiatry, and specialized consultation-liaison services are just a few of the additional clinical opportunities created for the residents. Biologic therapies are reviewed continuously in a four-year longitudinal psychopharmacology curriculum and implemented across all care settings.

Residents gain important practical skills through a thoughtfully created curriculum that includes experiences in teaching, quality improvement, research, the business of medicine, and personal wellness. Resident growth is promoted through participation in local, national, and regional conferences. There is an established history of excellence in residents’ performance as recognized through numerous fellowships, publications, and awards. Awards have included the American Psychiatric Association Minority Fellowship, American Psychiatric Association Shire Child and Adolescent Fellowship, Rappeport Fellowship, Laughlin Fellowship, American Psychoanalytic Fellowship, American Association for Emergency Psychiatry Resident Award, the Ginsberg Fellowship, Honorable Mention for the Austen Riggs Award for Excellence in Psychotherapy, Roughton Award, and several winners for the Prisma Health Resident of the Year Award for all residency programs.
