00:15
my name is anu nagar i'm a geriatric
00:17
psychiatrist and the program director of
00:19
the greer psychiatry residency program
00:22
at prisma health our purpose at the
00:25
greer psychiatry residency program is to
00:28
train residents to provide mental health
00:30
services in the
00:32
community in an ambulatory and
00:34
outpatient setting
00:36
one of the more attractive features of
00:38
our program is its longitudinal
00:40
curriculum which simply means that our
00:42
residents get to work alongside
00:45
neurology and family medicine both
00:47
housed in this building throughout their
00:50
training
00:52
[Music]
00:54
at our program we aim to offer our
00:57
residents ample opportunity for personal
01:00
and professional growth i speak for
01:02
myself and our faculty here at the greer
01:05
psychiatry residency program when i say
01:08
we find
01:09
tremendous joy
01:11
in watching our residents
01:13
grow and develop into compassionate
01:15
physicians there were three core things
01:18
that brought me here to this program
01:20
over the others
01:22
the curriculum
01:24
the location and the value system
01:28
so for me
01:29
i think that
01:30
what we're doing here is new compared to
01:33
most places
01:34
while most places have like the block
01:36
system we have the longitudinal system
01:38
where i'm being exposed
01:40
to different specialties
01:42
every day of the week
01:44
and i think for me it just it makes me
01:46
more well-rounded as a physician
01:49
and with the upcoming exams that we
01:50
usually do have in our first year of
01:52
residency i think it really helped us
01:55
excel
01:58
and then again in terms of location i'm
02:00
someone who likes more of a communal
02:02
atmosphere family-oriented place
02:04
and this place offers that to me
02:06
compared to most places i interviewed
02:08
that and then in terms of value system
02:10
is still the same thing
02:12
family oriented
02:13
collegial atmosphere that is very
02:16
important to me and i think it's very
02:17
important if you're looking for a
02:18
residency program to go to you want to
02:20
be in a place where people are willing
02:22
to teach you and are actually teaching
02:24
you something that really stuck
02:26
out to me whenever i was interviewing
02:29
was just
02:30
you know how supportive everybody was
02:33
and how much
02:35
they focus on community not only you
02:38
know outside the hospital community here
02:40
but just within
02:42
the program itself i feel very
02:45
comfortable talking to all my
02:46
co-residents my faculty my attendings
02:50
about whatever it is that i need whether
02:52
it
02:53
is related to work or or not i felt it
02:55
was really important to be in a
02:57
community that appreciated its
02:58
healthcare resources
03:00
and in a healthcare system that
03:03
appreciated its its employees um too
03:06
often i think residency programs are an
03:08
excuse for
03:09
uh for cheap labor for hospitals and and
03:11
it was pretty apparent to me um by the
03:14
organization and the way that they have
03:17
the organization of the program that
03:19
that would not be the case with us
03:21
it is so much more uh culturally
03:23
competent in its approach to treating
03:25
its patient population you know mental
03:27
health care is one of those things where
03:29
if you're not treating in a holistic
03:31
fashion and considering all aspects of a
03:33
patient's life
03:35
then you're not probably doing your best
03:37
job and
03:38
this the the approach here recognizing
03:41
that
03:42
its patient population does have a large
03:44
spiritual component i mean this is a
03:46
this is the bible belt that we live in
03:48
and so having that competency as is a
03:51
core part of your curriculum
03:54
is is useful and it means that we're
03:56
really looking to treat people here in
03:58
closing i would like to emphasize the
04:01
culture
04:02
at the psychiatry program in greer
04:05
we strongly value diversity and
04:07
inclusion and our faculty values each
04:11
resident as an individual as well as a
04:14
mental health professional
