Psychiatry Residency Greer - How to apply

Program Code: 1683400C1

Prisma Health and University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greer Program offers eight first year Categorical positions in psychiatry. This program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) psychiatry match. We will be conducting virtual interviews October-January.

  • Applications for PGY-1 positions are only accepted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System).
  • Candidates are encouraged to apply early, as interview slots are limited.
  • Board exam scores and number of attempts are taken into account as we evaluate the totality of the application.
  • International Medical Graduates with US clinical experience are welcome to apply.
  • Fluency in written and oral English is a requirement.
  • Letters of recommendation from US physicians are strongly preferred.
  • Preference is given to applicants from US medical schools.

ERAS Requirements

  • Provide a transcript from your medical school, a dean’s letter and two letters of reference, at least one of which should be from a psychiatrist.
  • In addition to the standard ERAS documentation, applicants must include a supplemental paragraph at the end of their personal statement describing how the Greer program is uniquely suited to their priorities for residency training.
  • For allopathic medical school applicants we require successful completion of the USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 CK. (Due to possible delays caused by the pandemic, Step 2 score not expected at time of initial application review.)
  • For osteopathic medical school applicants we require successful completion of COMLEX Level 1 and COMLEX Level 2 CE. (Due to possible delays caused by the pandemic, Level 2 score not expected before initial application review.)
  • For all applicants, if not graduating from medical school in this current training year, successful completion of USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3 is encouraged.

We delight in meeting prospective residents! Upon receipt and review of the above information, carefully chosen applicants will be invited to arrange a mutually convenient time for interviews via Thalamus. Final acceptance to the program is at the discretion of the department chair and the residency training program director, upon the advice of the Resident Selection Committee. Initial appointment to the program is for one year and reappointment for each subsequent year is based on the resident’s performance.

The MATCH-Program Quotas and Withdrawals

At any time after a Match opens, program directors can access the Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) system to increase, decrease, or make other changes to their quotas, or the number of positions they desire to fill through a Match. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Quotas must be finalized in the R3 system by the applicable Quota Change Deadline.
  • All quota changes must be approved by the institutional official.
  • Program directors cannot certify their rank order lists when a quota change is pending approval by the institutional official.

Changing Quota and Program Details support guide

The NRMP will change quotas after the Quota Change Deadline only in cases of extreme emergency such as loss of funding or loss of accreditation or if the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME®) approves an increase in resident/fellowship complement. Requests for exceptions must be made via email sent from the institutional official or the program director, with the institutional official copied. Please email requests to support@nrmp.org.

Quota Changes and the All In Policy

Main Residency Match

Quota changes should comply with the terms of All In Policy. The ability to change a program quota does not relieve program directors and institutional officials of their responsibility to register and attempt to fill all positions through the Match. Certain conditions may qualify for an exception to the All In Policy; however, it is the responsibility of program directors and institutional officials to determine whether the situation they face meets the criteria for an exception.

Specialties Matching Service

If a Specialties Matching Service Match sponsor voluntarily implements the All In Policy, programs in the subspecialty that participate in the Match must register and attempt to fill all positions in the Match. Questions about reductions in quotas should be directed to the Match sponsor before the Quota Change Deadline for the Match.

Withdrawing from a Match

Programs that elect not to participate are expected to withdraw from the Match. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Withdrawals must be finalized by the applicable Quota Change Deadline.
  • All withdrawals must be approved by the institutional official.

Notification of Successful Applicants

All interviewed candidates are reviewed by the Resident Selection Committee to complete the rank order list that is submitted to the NRMP. Successful applicants will be notified by NRMP match results, followed by a letter from the program.
