Goal

To provide the best training possible while adhering to ACGME requirements, focusing in on the Core Competencies Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice Based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems Based Practice and to prepare general surgery residents to function as a qualified practitioner of colon and rectal surgery at the advanced level of performance expected of a board-certified specialist.

Objectives

The objectives of this fellowship are to teach technical proficiency, stress compassionate patient care, maintain academic excellence, and instill the work ethic required to become a successful surgeon. We do this while maintaining camaraderie and a collegial atmosphere among the resident team conducive to physician learning. At the completion of training each graduate will be eligible for board certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

The educational experience is under the oversight of the Academic Chairman of surgery and the operational direction of the Program Director. Full-time and clinical faculty participate in and supervise all educational activities of the fellows including patient care.

Second only to experience, self-directed learning is a critical component of any physician’s initial and ongoing education.  Therefore, it is essential that fellows have a consistent approach to self-directed learning during this program.

Composition of the Program

The colon and rectal surgical training curriculum involves a series of rotations with each faculty member in one month blocks. During each block, the fellow is assigned to a specific attending. During that period, the fellow is expected to attend private office hours with that faculty member at least once a week and preferably two to three times a week. As well, the fellow will attend weekly colon and rectal clinic under the oversight of faculty.
