What drew me to the program: Being in Greenville during medical school allowed me to rotate with the faculty and house staff here, and I felt like there was the perfect mix of academics and camaraderie. Attendings were great on rounds leading nuanced academic discussions, and the residents were all friends with one another and clearly cared for one another more than simply working together. I saw graduates land solid jobs in general practice or prestigious fellowships. My wife and I loved the city, and we really did not want to leave!

What drew me to the program: For me, Prisma Health checked all of my "what are you looking for in a program" boxes. It is university affiliated, has a smaller class size, a positive/supportive program culture and the ability to shape your time in residency to fit future career goals. What really sealed the deal was the feeling of easy camaraderie exhibited between residents and faculty, from Happy Hour and through interview day, that felt like family.

A big bonus is the city of Greenville! I was very fortunate to be able to visit the city before ranking, and I love the welcoming feeling, tons and tons of food options, Falls Park and hiking on the Swamp Rabbit.

What drew me to the program: I got a very good sense of strong leadership from this program during the interview season and could easily see the residents felt very supported no matter what their future goals/interests were. There was a clear close-knit family atmosphere amongst the residents and faculty, and the program has an intentional culture of fostering a positive learning environment where everyone succeeds.

What drew me to the program: I enjoyed that the program was medium sized, university affiliated and located in the beautiful city of Greenville, SC. Having colleagues from my medical school who are now current residents speak so highly of the program also made me feel I would fit in well at Prisma Health. I felt these aspects of the program would allow me to make the most of my residency experience.

What drew me to the program: When looking at residency programs, I really wanted a program that cultivated a friendly, supportive and collaborative learning and working environment. Even through a virtual interview, I could tell Prisma Health Upstate definitely had the environment I was looking for as there was a great sense of camaraderie among the residents and faculty. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, and I am excited to learn and grow as a physician at Prisma Health Upstate!

What drew me to the program: Greenville is a city that I have always loved to visit. I grew up playing soccer tournaments here and then during my time at Clemson, I would visit pretty often. I'm lucky that there is such a great program in this city for me to pursue medicine. This institution has shown constant support for its residents. It is invested in our success and demonstrates that with actions. I had a wonderful experience on my interview day and loved the commitment to teaching and research. Ultimately, the program checked all my boxes and more!

What drew me to the program: What first drew me to Prisma Health was obviously its location. Greenville is just a short drive from the beach, the lake or the mountains and is truly a great place to live. Further, being able to complete my residency training so close to my fiancé and family was an absolute dream.

What ultimately sold me on the program, though, was the supportive and familial environment it obviously works to foster. During my interview and meet-and-greet, it was apparent to me that the residents and faculty members alike had genuine friendships and investments in each other’s lives. I have always thrived in a learning environment like this, so it was important for me to find a residency program that valued this culture.

Finally, the program is the perfect blend of a community and academic program providing many didactic opportunities with weekly morning report, noon conference, academic half days, and so much more. I am so excited to grow as a resident doctor with Prisma Health!

What drew me to the program: From the first Meet and Greet, it was easy to see that the residents were so friendly and genuinely connected with each other’s lives, by the way that they interacted through the screen. This felt significant because it isn't something that is always easily conveyed over a zoom meeting. Plus, Greenville is an awesome city, and I am super excited to be close to family again after spending time away for medical school.

What drew me to the program: Finding the program for you is a very simple endeavor it seems. You start by imagining in one form or another the ideal residency as a list of qualities you think will make you a great doctor. I even had a doctor tell me he chose his residency program because it checked off all those boxes and he knew that at the end of those three years he would be the doctor he had always wanted to be.

He became that doctor, but he shared that he lost so many pieces of himself along the way: his compassion, his humor, his love of medicine and so on. Even though he became the doctor he had sought out to become, he would, if he could again, choose a different path to that doctorship, one where he didn’t have to lose himself in the process.

Finding the right program is something more than just a checklist and checkmarks. Prisma checked all the boxes for me, but was that enough? It had plenty of benefits, academic rigor, clinical autonomy, but was that enough? I think not. But what was enough then? It was when Prisma Health checked a box that I had not even thought to draw: Happiness.

Now this seems silly to me in hindsight because of course we all want to be happy, but did you really think to include that in your checklist? I didn’t, but I found in my conversations with Dr. Jindal and my other interviews a sense of pride about this program and, more importantly, a sense of immense happiness. This was echoed in my second look opportunity when every class of residents was sitting bright eyed and bushy tailed with a catered meal in their bellies and laughter in the air. Residency is hard and yet here sat everyone happy.

I want to be a great doctor, but I also want to be happy. I was drawn to the one program that has me pondering what it could mean to have both.

What drew me to the program: Before my interview I had never even been to Greenville, SC. I was looking for a medium sized program that was welcoming, had a good environment and opportunities to pursue research and fellowship opportunities. I’ve always loved the warmer weather and that is what initially inspired me to explore the more southern states. At the end of the interview, I just had a good feeling about the program, it is hard to describe but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I visited once before match day and fell in love with the city. It is just large enough to have plenty to do, but small enough to preserve unique charm and a community feel - both things I really enjoy. The people were friendly, which helps too!
