Internal Medicine Residency Greenville - Clinical Highlights

Our Internal Medicine point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) program is led by Dr. Mike Wagner. As the Director of Internal Medicine Ultrasound, Dr. Wagner coordinates and oversees POCUS activities in the department of medicine across 6 medical campuses at the CME, GME, and UME level. Dr. Wagner is helping advance the field of IMPOCUS nation-wide through speaking engagements, hands-on workshops, online resources, publications, and serving in leadership positions for numerous medical organizations.

At the beginning of their PGY-1 year, our residents participate in procedural simulation training. Using sophisticated mannequins, this experience is designed to give residents training in procedures such as intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, lumbar puncture, paracentesis, and thoracentesis. Residents are mentored by experienced faculty and chief residents in a supportive environment. There are four general medicine teaching services where residents work under supervisory teaching attendings to care for a wide variety of adult patients needing care, including residents’ clinic patients.

Critical care teaching service residents work in multidisciplinary teams to gain exposure caring for critically ill adults. Residents will also work on the pulmonary service, inpatient cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology and hematology/oncology services, with the opportunity to elect to rotate with additional subspecialty services pursuant to their future career interests and needs.

While on all services, residents will work directly with supervisory teaching attending physicians, allowing robust learning. We utilize a night medicine model, so residents are not required to take traditional 24-hour call. 

As a resident in Internal Medicine at Prisma Health, your advanced training will offer an excellent balance of learning in both inpatient and outpatient settings. You will be given opportunities to manage patients with graduated autonomy, learn and practice new procedures and develop existing skills necessary for exemplary patient-physician relationships.

We are proud to have an excellent 5-year board pass rate in our program. The program pays for all residents to receive question banks as part of self-study preparation to pass the Internal Medicine board exam. We also have a faculty-led longitudinal board preparation curriculum that spans all three years. Additionally, all of our PGY-3 residents participate in a board review elective as their last rotation in residency, which they have found very valuable.

Residents are able to choose from a wide variety of existing electives. These include Addiction Medicine, Allergy, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Dermatology, Hematology/Oncology, Hospitalist, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology, Outpatient Cardiology, Palliative Care, Private Practice, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, Sports Medicine, and Women's Health.

Interested residents are able to pursue away rotations, including in global health. Residents are able to arrange for global health experiences of their selection with adequate preparation and approval. Additionally, many residents choose to participate in the annual Brazil medical mission trip led by Internal Medicine Clinic attending and former Med-Peds graduate, Dr. Jeremy Byrd (Class of 2009). This is a two-week elective annually in the fall that will be completed with most days being spent in Fortaleza, Brazil.
