Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Greenville - Chief Resident Message
Welcome to the Prisma Health Internal Medicine/Pediatrics program!
My name is Nick Brewer and I’m a 4th year Internal Medicine/Pediatrics resident at Prisma Health. It is my distinct honor and privilege to serve as the Chief Resident for 2024-2025, and I am so excited that you have taken an interest in what our program has to offer! It’s difficult for me to express how much I appreciate and love this program, as it has had a profound impact on my life personally and professionally.
Of the many exceptional aspects of our program, I believe the two greatest strengths are the culture in which we train and the group of residents I train alongside. Our residents are provided a psychologically safe, robust clinical learning environment in which individual strengths as clinicians are allowed to flourish. It is apparent in every interaction with house staff, attending physicians, and hospital leadership that there is a common purpose of molding competent, compassionate physicians capable of providing world-class care to the patients of upstate South Carolina. It is also readily apparent that there is a true understanding that every physician brings their own unique perspectives and experiences to their practice of medicine, and that the culmination of these factors leads to a true culture of inclusivity. By meticulously cultivating individual strengths and interests, our health system is made stronger by the sum of its parts, and this is ultimately and most importantly to the benefit of our patients. This type of culture is not one that occurs by chance, but rather one that is the fruit of many years of intentional and thoughtful effort. While many programs nationally can offer exceptional culture, I believe Prisma Health truly stands apart.
Though the culture within our residency program is exceptional, my fellow residents are the true shining stars. As strong of a physician as each resident is, each is an even better person. Common qualities of our residents include thoughtfulness, open-mindedness, curiosity, humility, and grit, among many others. One of our former Med/Peds chiefs likened the residents to a quilt, with every person comprising different patterns or fabrics that come together to form something beautiful. Every year, we welcome a new group of interns that bring new insights, passions, and interests to our program, and the quilt continues to become more vibrant as our Med/Peds community grows. It’s difficult to comprehend how a group of individuals with such differing career interests, perspectives, life experiences, and hobbies can become so close knit, but I truly feel that my co-residents are like family. We are a family not because we are alike, but rather because we are strengthened by each other’s differences and alternative perspectives.
I would be remiss not to mention the beautiful city in which we live. Greenville is a city with something to offer everyone, including a 28-mile nature trail, excellent restaurants, a vibrant arts scene, and several semi-professional sports teams. The community of Greenville is incredibly warm and welcoming, and it’s an honor to serve our neighbors who constitute our diverse patient population. Greenville also happens to be a Med/Peds hub, with well over 50 Internal Medicine/Pediatrics trained providers across all pediatric and adult specialties practicing in the area. Whatever your career interest, there is a mentor available within our health system who understands what it means to be uniquely Med/Peds.
I consider my past three years here a gift, and there are so many more wonderful things I could say about our program. If you have any questions, please reach out to me! Thank you again for taking the time to learn a bit more about Prisma Health Med/Peds!
